Name of Artist: Nikole Herriott
:
1. Personal Background: (5 sentences. Culture, nationality, schooling, important life events, etc.)
A former pastry chef, she is now a photographer. The majority of her work is shot in partnership with Michael Graydon. They shoot varied subjects as a team; travel, food, interiors, lifestyle and still life for both commercial and editorial clients. She is also the co-founder of Herriott Grace, a housewares line she started with her father in 2008. For Herriott Grace, she styles, photographs, and produces all images.
2. Style: (5 sentences. What visual characteristics does this artist’s work possess? If you can compare it to a painting or art history style please do.)
She takes a lot of pictures of food and food utensils. In all of these pictures you can really see that there is an obvious point and a quite suttile thing in the background. For example, in her picture with lemons she has the obvious point of the beauty of this fruit. But if you look closer the table is all dirty and nasty and the bag is ripped, so I really think that she is trying to show the beauty in an area with poverty.
3. Philosophy: (5 sentences. What were the major ideas behind this artist’s work? Where they personal, political, social, etc. What were they trying to “say” with their photographs?)
Because she was a pastry chef she now takes a lot of pictures of food. They are very beautiful and sometimes have a deeper meaning on it. But now she runs a workshop with her father were they make chair and stuff like that. So now she has a lot of cool pictures will old chairs and bright food. The contrast on these pictures are amazing.
4. Influences: (5 sentences. How has the photographer influenced you in your work?)
She has influenced me a lot in all the pictures I take. For example, in my pictures that I am making a copy of I realized how important every little detail is. Like the angle of the photo. Or the way I rotate the fruit so that the pictures says what you want it to say. These little differences are what makes a good picture a great picture.
5. Sources: You need to include the 3 images, their title and their source (which may include a link).
1.https://www.nikoleherriott.com/summer#13 Lemons
2.https://www.nikoleherriott.com/spring#41 Untitled
3.https://www.nikoleherriott.com/summer#20 Leeks
6. Compare and Contrast: You will need to compare and contrast your final 3 images with the 3 images you choose by your photographer. Write about each piece (5 sentence.)
So for my first one I chose to use oranges instead of lemons first because I liked the glow off the orange better than the lemon and it was easier to get oranges. For my second pictures I feel like our pictures are very close to identical but I like mine a little better because my background is better.
And for the third picture I used a different vegetable because I couldn’t find the exact veggie that was in the picture. And besides that the pictures are pretty similar. Besides the background which is a different granite. And that is my compare and contrast from my photos and Nikole Herriott
7. Personal Artist Statement: Your images should tell a story. In 5 sentences tell me about your images. Use the Composition 101, Elements and Principles and 10 Rules of Photography vocabulary.
These images while being very close to Nikole tell there own story. For example, the oranges mean a lot to me. When I lived in L.A. my family had an orange tree in my backyard. They would pack at least two oranges in my brown bag lunch everyday. And I have so many great memories making orange juice with my mom and dad. And what I really like about my pictures is the movement, it looks like the oranges are just flowing out of the bag.
